How Reviewing Information Immediately Can Help

To prevent a loss of new information, review the material immediately. Review your notes briefly within 30 minutes or so following the class or presentation. This quick review serves to reinforce the newly acquired information in your short-term memory.

Thus, if you have four pages of notes following a one-hour lecture, simply reread your notes as soon as possible. Don't attempt to memorize them or spend a long period of time studying them. Your goal is simply to briefly review the key concepts and ideas shortly after the information has been received.

The short reinforcing review enables much of the new information to eventually be retained in long-term memory. Skipping the short-term review of new information frequently results in loss -- "I forgot."
