Multiple Answer Questions

Very often, this type of test item causes much frustration and anxiety, even for good test takers. This type of question often consists of the test item followed by a series of numbered options, followed in turn by lettered options. Thus, there are twice as many options and distracters. For example:

Stem: Which of the following is a function of the U.S Supreme Court?

Options
  1. Rendering appellate decisions from lower courts.
  2. Approving cabinet appointments of the president.
  3. Providing opinions on current social and public issues.
  4. Implementing laws on the federal and state level.
Options
  1. I only.
  2. II and IV.
  3. I and III.
  4. II, III and IV.

Letter C is the correct response (the key) to this question. Thus, Roman numeral options II and IV, as well as options A, B and D, are all distracters.

Very often, the multiple answer question can be reduced to a true or false test item. For example, you could read the above question on the Supreme Court and, before each option, say:

True or false, rendering appellate decisions from lower courts.

True or false, approving cabinet appointments of the president.

True or false, providing opinions on current social and public issues.

True or false, implementing laws on the federal and state level.
