The Learning Challenge as an Adult Learner

Effective Learning = Skills + Enthusiasm + Attitude

The necessary effective learning skills that we will explain and impart to you through this book include:

  • Reading and comprehension skills
  • Listening skills
  • Writing skills
  • Certain math skills
  • Study skills
  • Test-taking techniques

Not only is it important to be able to read, but equally important to understand what you are reading and what it means. Often, people read by simply scanning without a clear understanding of what it is they're actually reading. Once material is read, how well do you retain this information? The application of proper reading and comprehension skills naturally leads to more effective learning.

Most people can hear; not all people listen. Since much learning takes place through our auditory sense, it is critical that we be effective listeners. Again, this is especially important with regard to adults. Children hear everything! It seems as we get older, not only may our hearing become physically impaired, but we also tend to listen less and less.

A mother may say to her young child, "Did you hear what I said?" In contrast, a boss may say to his subordinate, "Are you listening?" Often the employee replies, "Yes, I heard you." Did the employee listen in this case, or simply hear?
